Pakistan: Pressure grows on Musharraf to step down as president
Pervez Musharraf, president of Pakistan, is coming under growing pressure in Pakistan to resign his position or face impeachment. Senior legislators are moving against him, saying his re-election as president in November 2007 was invalid.
President Musharraf suspended the Pakistani constitution days before a decision had been reached about the legality of his position.
Musharraf, a key supporter of President George W Bush who seized power in a military coup in 1999, has defied his opponents, saying: “I will defeat those who try to push me to the wall. If they use their right to oust me, I have the right to defend myself.”
