ANC names new South African President
The African National Congress has named deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe as South African head of state after Thabo Mbeki announced his resignation. Mbeki quit after allegations, which he denies, that he interfered in the decision to prosecute ANCchief and political rival Jacob Zuma.
Motlanthe will serve as President until elections are held in seven months’ time. Zuma is expected to run in 2009 and is the favourite to emerge as the country’s next president.
