British Sperm Donor Shortage

Baby The British Fertility Society has warned that sperm donation services in the UK must be revolutionised to stop shortages.

The removal of donor anonymity in 2005 appears to have led to a dwindling in numbers of volunteers, leaving fertility services looking overseas for possible donors.

Around 4,000 patients need donor sperm every year and many clinics have long waiting lists or have been forced to stop providing services at all.

    There is definitely still a shortage, but according to HFEA figures, the numbers of sperm donors have actually *increased* since the rules on anonymity were changed, thus reversing a three-year decline.
